I’m sure there are some Millenials who know Nimoy because they heard their parents talk about him, but who talks about Nichelle Nicols? She is beloved by Star Trek and many sci-fi fans, but she has never been widely known outside of those communities. Hard-core sci-fi fans, yes, but not the population in general. I think if you talk to 100 Millenials and Gen-Z people and ask who Leonard Nimoy was, they won’t be able to tell you. But my adult children are in their 30s now and have no idea who Leonard Nimoy was. I grew up in the 50s and 60s and remember him well, not only from TOS but Fringe and that goofy reality show he did, “In Search Of”. Regarding the MSW remake, and easy solution is do what they did on the Night Court remake, where they introduced a previously unknown daughter for Harry as the new Judge Stone. It’s anyone’s guess as to how long Ethan Peck will play the role, but if SNW somehow continues for several years and especially if Peck starts to play the part in movies, I could see the tide starting to shift to him. I agree that most people nowadays think of Leonard Nimoy as Spock, but that’s because he played the role for so many years and many of us remember him vividly from TOS and multiple movies. Most of this is just my opinion, but it is safe to say that if you were to show random people on the street a book of mugshots and ask them to pick out Spock, they’d point at Leonard Nimoy, and not Peck or Quinto. It was always a rehash of what came before, trying to fix something that was never broken. Strange New Worlds will probably occupy a weird space of being somewhat enjoyed by some, but not really fitting into the proper Trek universe, and a large part of this was the fact that it was never its own series. Picard will be remembered as a one season show. Discovery is practically already forgotten and it’s not even done yet. Modern Trek hasn’t made a huge impact on the legacy of the franchise. But because he has been given the iconic name, he will quickly fade away. If he had played just another Vulcan, like Tuvok or T’Pol, there would be room in the legacy of Trek for him. And because the modern producers are so obsessed with reusing beloved characters and storylines, he will never be remembered for this work. He is a new character, with a new backstory (some similarities, but mostly new), written in a new way. The character on the new Trek shows isn’t the same character. That is who we picture when someone says the name, no matter who else has played him in reboots. Fifty years from now, when people put Spock’s face on TV shirts and holo-memes, it will be Leonard Nimoy’s face that they use. I’m not going to bash Ethan Peck here, because I’m sure he is good with what he’s been given, but what he was given was a thankless task.
